The barge boat was once the ultimate symbol of freedom used to transport people around Europe, discovering new places. With many barges now unused, this gives the opportunity to give them a second life, as houseboats.
On the KNSM island in Amsterdam, a 150m2 barge boat has been lovingly restored to become a house boat, with each room renovated by a different artist or designer. MASS has been asked to design the interior of the last room, the steering house (stuurhuis). We see this room as the centre of the boat’s freedom and potential.
Our concept is to look at the medium in which the boat travelled, water, using this as inspiration. The interior of the stuurhuis will mimic the waves it used to travel on, undulating throughout the room. Everything will flow together, seating to tables, tables to walls creating one continuous surface. The room represents movement, a visualisation of the freedom a boat provides.
